The Gwydir River

The Gwydir RiverThe Gwydir River starts not far from Armidale and flows west towards Bundarra.

The head water around Bundarra is home to some of the best Red Fin fishing around with many fish being over one and a half kilograms.

The Moredun and Georges Creeks are two of the main tributaries of the Gwydir above Bundarra and probably hold more water. Both of these hold large numbers of Trout, Red Fin and Murray Cod.

Down stream of Bundarra the Gwydir flows into Copeton Dam.

Copeton is a large expanse of water, around 17 kilometers long, and is home to some of the best fishing in New South Wales.

The fish species that inhabit Copeton are Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Red Fin, Catfish and Spangled Perch.Best access to Copeton is at Copeton Waters State Park around 30 Kilometers from Inverell.

Further west the river flows through Bingara and on to Gravesend. Between these two towns the Gwydir picks up another tributary, the Horton River, which also carries a large volume of water.

From Gravesend the river continues its way west through Moree where eventually it runs into the Barwon River near Walgett.

This section of the river is controlled by agriculture, the water turns very muddy and the water level rises and falls constantly. Also large amounts of pesticides find there way to the river killing off fish and other wildlife habitats.
